Carbon clinchers starting at $595 - 36 mm deep and 24 mm wide
As I have said in the past, getting component parts is a challenge. But at the same time, it’s an opportunity because it forces me out of my comfort zone. I have to look for new possibilities and sometimes that brings up great new options. This is a case in point My carbon rim supplier happens to have some closeouts on carbon clincher rims. They have minor cosmetic defects but are otherwise normal. I placed a limited order and the rims are now out for final finishing. Chinese New Year is coming up in early February and that always delays things an extra week or two so I am forecasting that I will get the rims in early March.
In order to get to the $595 price point some component compromises have to be made, but the good news is that I offer other options. Since every wheel is custom made you can pick out exactly what you want. The opening price point includes my A220 hubs, Sapim Race spokes, and brass nipples. Note that all improvements won’t increase durability, they will just decrease weight. Here are more specifics.
Rims: Note these are not tubeless compatible. They are for tires with tubes. The advantage to this is it’s easier to mount tires. These will have a minor amount of surface blemishes that will not effect performance in any way. I can’t show any photos because the rims are now in the process of being finished. They are a UD (unidirectional) weave (the most common) and will have a black matt finish.
Hubs: The A220 hubs have super smooth cartridge bearings and an alloy shell and axle. The major different in the set is that the rear hub in the A220 line has a steel cassette body. The higher end hubs have an alloy cassette body. The steel body is about 90 grams heavier.
Spokes: The Sapim Race spokes are a double butted 20.-1.8 spoke that weigh 5.7 grams. The Laser and CX Ray weight about 4.4 grams. So over a set of wheels that adds up to 250 grams for the race and 195 grams for the Laser and CX Ray.
Nipples: Brass nipples weigh about 1 gram, alloy about .34 grams. So for the set of wheels it’s 44 grams for the brass and 15 grams for the alloy nipples.
So, you get the idea. The set with A220’s and Race spokes with brass nipples weighs about 1680 grams. If you go with the higher end hubs and Laser spokes with alloy nipples it would be about 1500 grams. The price would go up to $691 – Still an amazing price for a 1500 gram set of carbon clincher wheels.
Here’s a list including weights and prices. Note the weights on all of the options will vary slightly.
Note the term and shipping information: Terms are payment with order. Estimated shipping time is mid March – this may vary
